Teacher Lost in Tragic Accident

The tragic loss of a middle-school math teacher in an auto accident in Atlanta last month served as a grim reminder of the danger that can be present on Atlanta roadways, especially when other drivers are negligent or reckless. When the actions of another cause an accident, injury, or death, often the only recourse that victims have is through the help of an attorney. Of course, hiring an auto accident attorney in Atlanta cannot undo the damage that has been done, but it can help to bring closure for the victim or, in the case of a wrongful death, the victims’ family.

Shireen Haynes was pronounced dead at the scene after her auto was pushed across the median and into oncoming traffic where it was struck by a tractor-trailer. In the car with Haynes were fellow teacher Kay Price and her husband James. Both of them were taken to the hospital in critical condition following the accident. Haynes’ car was pushed into the oncoming traffic when a teenager lost control of the car she was driving and struck Haynes’ car. The teenager has since been charged with failing to maintain her lane, driving on a restricted license, and driving with a suspended registration.

Authorities have indicated that the teenager and her mother could also each be charged with vehicular homicide because the girl was driving with a provisional license meaning that an adult was required to be in the vehicle with her. The teenager did have another passenger with her at the time of the accident, but it was another teen and not an adult. Neither teenager was injured in the accident. It was not clear whether or not the girl or her mother had yet retained the services of an attorney.

Because a teenage girl got behind the wheel of a car when she was not supposed to, a woman has lost her life and two other people are seriously injured. It is true that sometimes auto accidents “just happen,” however, when negligent or reckless behavior enables them to happen, justice demands that those responsible be held accountable. It remains to be seen whether or not the girl or her mother will face criminal homicide charges or what a trial for those charges might bring about. However, those affected by this auto accident do not have to wait for the criminal courts to act. Rather, they can consult an auto accident attorney in Atlanta to determine if they have a viable civil case. Anyone who has been injured in an auto accident through the fault of another should also contact an auto accident attorney so that they can receive the compensation, justice, and closure that are due.
