Dry Erase Markers: The Teacher’s New Best Friend

For an invention or innovation to have value it has to fulfill a need, sometimes it fills a need people didn’t realize existed, but they fill a need. For example air conditioning caught on so well because it filled a need to have a way to regulate high temperatures. While not as earth shattering dry erase markers filled a need by replacing chalk with something that’s easier to read, easier to write with, and has a lighter board. Dry erase markers come in a variety of different colors, sizes, and tip shapes. They allow teachers and professors to write on the board in a much better way than chalk. Some of it is because of the markers, some of it because of the boards themselves.

Dry erase boards weigh a fraction of what a chalk board does. They’re cheaper to make, and much lighter and easier to install. Dry erase boards can be installed in such a way to create extra surface area, they’re light enough to create sliding panels so you can move the panels to expose or cover different areas. Such a style would be hard to do with chalk due to the weight of the boards. Dry erase boards also clean much more easily than chalk, they don’t produce nearly as much dust and secondary mess as chalk.

However, that’s the board itself, what really sets the two mediums apart is the writing tools. Dry erase markers are infinitely superior to chalk. There’s more variety between the types and colors of dry erase markers than there is with chalk. Chalk frankly feels awful in the hand, it’s not easy to write with, and doesn’t always draw a clear line. The color selection for chalk is much more limited than for dry erase markers. The different tips allow a teacher to find one that fits their writing style and what works for them. The different colors allow you to organize things on the board in a color coded way, or to keep everything clear in black and white.

The nice thing about dry erase markers is that they provide a real range of choices and options for the person writing on the wall, for teachers it’s nice having choices other than yellow on green board, pale white on green, or any of the other colors that will barely show. Not everyone who uses a dry erase board is a teacher though; a lot of people use a dry erase marker to leave a note for themselves or their kids. This is because the boards and markers are so light and easy to use that they can be put practically anywhere and if the marker falls, all you have to do is pick it up, with chalk, having kids using it in your kitchen means you might end up with shattered chalk everywhere, and the dust will get around.
