Once you have purchased a humidor it will still take some work and maintenance to keep your cigars fresh. You will have to season your humidor as well as avoid making a few common mistakes to make sure you are using your humidor correctly.
Seasoning a Humidor
Humidors require seasoning before you start storing your cigars. Check to see if the interior of your humidor is finished. If it is it will not require seasoning. Seasoning is needed to keep the raw exposed wood, hopefully Spanish cedar, moist. To season your humidor you will need a new sponge and distilled water. It is important you use distilled water as tap water has minerals and other components that can be damaging to the wood. You can than soak your sponge and apply the water liberally to the inside of your humidor. Cover all wooden parts of the humidor with the sponge. Then soak the sponge in distilled water and place it in a plastic bag and put it in the humidor with the lid closed. Your humidor will contain a humidification device. Follow the instructions on proper use and apply distilled water as indicated. Allow the device to dry on a towel for at least 30 minutes and then place it back in the humidor. Leave the sponge in the humidor for 12 hours or overnight. Check the humidor to see if the device requires more water and see if the sponge is still wet. If it is still damp it is fine, if it is drying add more water and return it to the plastic bag and leave it for another day.
Dry Cigars
When you buy cheap Hav-A-Tampa Cigars or more expensive lines and you don’t smoke them right away they will dry out. This will affect the way they burn and in most cases you will have to dispose of them. Many people have tried to bring their cigars back to life but this is not advisable. In most cases you will end up with too much moisture which will result in mould or you can split the cigars, both rendering them useless. Leaving your humidor out of direct sunlight as well as maintaining your humidification device will help keep your cigars at the perfect humidity. Also avoid placing them on a fan or air conditioner grate where the humidor will be too cool.
