Light(en)ing Up Your Smile

When it comes to creating a white smile, there are two streams. People will go and visit a dentist, particularly a cosmetic dentist, or they will work to achieve it through over the counter (OTC) methods. Along with the teeth whitening products, some dentists, and even various individuals, will purchase teeth whitening lights.

What are Teeth Whitening Lights?

A teeth whitening or bleaching light, like sun lamps, are special lights designed to help dentists or other individuals to whiten the teeth. Teeth whitening lights tend to be either a laser light or an LED light. The LED light is usually blue and gives off a cool warmth as exposure to heat can prove to be detrimental to your teeth. It has been found to be safe for professionals and individuals to use. The low energy light is safe to use and does not burn the soft mouth tissue when used.

Optionally, the light for the procedure can be a laser. These are more powerful than LED lights. AS a result, they are never recommended for at home whitening programs. They are strictly for dental professionals to use in their offices and other under controlled environments.

The Method

The method consists of several steps.

  • You or your dentist will apply hydrogen peroxide, usually as a gel, to the teeth

  • He or she, if the light is a laser or to lower the risk of gum and soft mouth tissue damage, will cover the gums with either a protective gel or a rubber guard

  • The cold blue LED light or laser is placed to where it will directly shine on the treated and exposed teeth.

  • The LED light needs to shine on the teeth for from 15-20 minutes for a single treatment. If the dentist uses a laser, the process is similar

The number of treatments will vary according to the light used and the strength of the whitening agent. It may be necessary to have as many as 3 treatments if an LED light is used.

What Do Teeth Whitening Lights Do?

The purpose of teeth whitening lights, whether laser or LED, is to activate the teeth whitening process. Light activation occurs when the right whitening agent is applied to the teeth and a light shone upon them. The intent is to speed up the process of teeth whitening. According to this theory, the application of the light sets in motion the activation of hydrogen peroxide. This speeds up the breaking up of the molecules sending these “free radicals” off to attack the stains. It is postulated the light speeds up the entire process.

It is possible to obtain a whiter smile through the application of various teeth whitening products. Yet, it is also possible to enhance or speed up the effect by including teeth whitening lights in the process. While controversy still rages around the actual effectiveness of LED and/or laser lights, more and more dentists are utilizing these tools and their patients are seeing the results they hope for because of them.
