It is no secret that if you are going to own a gun, you need to have a safe place to keep it, and under your pillow doesn’t count. The best place for your guns to be stored is in safes, preferably safes that are designed specifically for guns.
You don’t want to keep your gun collection in just any old safe, you want to make sure that it is not only going to be in a place where no one but yourself can get to it, but it should also be dry and weatherproofed. While the size of the safe is going to play a huge part in the final cost of the safe, most gun owners find that they spend at least a $1000 on their safes. Considering the peace of mind you’ll get from knowing that you guns are secure and properly stored, the price is more than worthwhile.
The last thing any of us want is to have one of our guns get stolen and potentially end up on the black market. The only thing we would like to happen less is to find out that your gun was used to commit a crime. The best way to make sure that this never happens is to make sure that the gun safe you purchase is high security. High security safes are designed to be robbery proof. They have an outer shell that is designed to destroy the drill bits if someone tries to drill their way into the safe. In addition to the drill proof shell, the high security safes also have multi-locking features that make it impossible for thieves to remove the door. With the exception of the B-rated safes the high security safes are fire proof, and can be anchored to the floor, so you don’t have to worry about the thief taking off with your gun collection and safe.
If you have any rifles in your gun collection, you are going to want to make sure that the safes you are looking at are a minimum of 58 inches. These will provide you with just enough room for a rifle with a 30 inch barrel. Most gun experts won’t consider any safes that don’t have drawers that they can use for either smaller handguns or to store ammunition. Most gun collectors are also very organized and want some shelves on the inside of their safe. The more money you are willing to spend on gun safes, the more features you are going to be able to take advantage of.
Unless you are using a fingerprint safe, you are going to want to make sure that you have the keys and/or combination to your safe somewhere that you can get to it, but where no one else will ever think to look for it.
