The Benefits of Maryland Living

It was the Native American’s who first lived in the sweeping countryside that is now known as Maryland. John Cabot-the Italian navigator-visited the area in 1498. The area was colonized by the British, who marked out the borders of the area, and named it Maryland, after the mother of Jesus. This initiative was taken by another colonist, George Calvert, the 1st Baron Baltimore, in 1632, shortly before his death. More settlers from Europe followed in 1634. Once Maryland was established as a safe haven of religious freedom for Catholics, it became an area to flock to and today, Maryland is classified as the wealthiest State in the United States.

In 1776 Maryland, during the American Revolution, became the State within the United States of America and the seventh state to Ratify the Constitution. Baltimore, the capitol city of Maryland, was growing rapidly to become one of the largest on the eastern coast and while Maryland remained a slave state until after 1860, many of the slaves were already freed by then.

Prosperity and Growth

Although Maryland is still one of the smallest states in terms of land mass, it can certainly claim to be one of the most beautiful on the eastern seaboard. Most of Maryland’s water ways are linked to the Chesapeake Bay watershed, hence one of Maryland’s nicknames, aside from ‘the free state’ and the ‘old line state’. Because of its natural beauty, Maryland is also why so many people choose to retire there.
