Why California Homeowners Should Maintain a Regular Rug Cleaning Schedule

The mats and rugs in your home collect dirt, allergens, and debris. They can even collect ticks and fleas if you have pets or live in areas where these pests are a problem. To prevent all these things from spreading around your home, you must maintain a regular cleaning schedule.

You don’t have to deep clean your entrance rug and the mats in your home every week. However, it is good to make sure they are cleaned on a regular basis. The amount of traffic going in and out of your home, the season, and other factors will play a role in how often these items need to be cleaned. For example, if you have pets and children and it is the rainy season, your entrance rug will likely need to be cleaned more often than a living room rug in a home without children and pets.

It is good to get in the habit of shaking out the doormats at least once a week. After shaking them out, you can sweep your porch and entranceway. On a monthly basis, you can do a deeper cleaning. If the entrance mat is made of plastic or rubber, get a scrub brush out and use a bit of soap to really get it clean. You can then hang it out to dry.

Other rugs in your home should be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. If food has spilled on the rug, you can spot clean it. Using a bit of baking soda or some mild soap and some water is likely all that is needed to get a clean.
